Hair transplant procedures for afro hair are very much possible, but this type of hair is special because of its thick and dense curly nature.

This is why it is very important to always speak with an expert hair surgeon beforehand, plan the transplantation and maximise the graft survival rates, in order to perform a successful procedure.

Afro Hair Transplant

Differences between afro hair and other types

Afro hair transplants are usually the most complex due to the nature of the tightly coiled hairs. Despite producing a lot of natural oils, African hair is also usually very coarse, which poses a challenge when having to perform a transplant treatment such as FUE.

Afro hair transplants are not risky, but the process from consultation to transplantation requires a lot of professional attention and skill, as the hair follicles are flat and oval and larger than other hair types - e.g. Caucasian hair. Because of this the grafts are twisted and surgeons need to be very careful when extracting and implanting the hair follicles in the donor area, in order to avoid damaging the surrounding hair roots.

Will afro hair transplantation be effective?

Hair transplantation of afro hair can be performed on both men and women with great long-term results. The method that can be used will depend on the results of an initial hair diagnosis by an expert hair transplant doctor.

The most effective method for Best Health Hair so far has been the FUE treatment - which involves removing individual hair follicles from the donor area and implanting them in the new target areas. The transplanted hair will be fully grown after 10-12 months - afro hair usually takes longer than other hair types.

Will the hair be patchy after the hair transplant?

This is a good question and it is a great reason to have a full consultation and specific plan with your hair transplant surgeon before making a final decision on which treatment you may have.

Transplanted hair actually has the same genetic makeup as the hair that existed in the donor area before, and so it should behave in the same way as the previous hair follicles.

As long as you have taken the advice of an expert hair doctor before and after your procedure, you should be reassured that your transplant will produce healthy and natural looking hair, as it should.
